Entrepreneurship is part of a bigger puzzle. It goes beyond helping an individual entrepreneur. The collective act of helping lots of entrepreneurs has an impact on our communities. Community leaders must be taught about these things. In many instances, these key players are FUNDING PARTNERS to the program and should be marketed to, just as any other customer.

White Paper - Entrepreneurship as an Economic Development Strategy - There are a lot of wonderful arguments for entrepreneurship as a central part of an economic development strategy. There are opponents of this philosophy and they will argue that their approach to economic development is BETTER than ours. We must be able to speak about the "macro" economic benefits of entrepreneurship. Many important people and organizations (legislatures) don't fully understand this. Legislative Postcard Series - Postcards are a great way to "drip" information on a target audience over the course of time. A little bit of information, provided in a very regular sequence gets through more powerfully. These are postcards we used in Kansas to communicate with the state of Kansas. Click here to access.

Kansas Legislative Strategy - Building a deeper partnership with your state is a critical step to growing your SBDC. Kansas has taken positive steps to furthering this relationship to create strong mutual benefit. Kansas was willing to share this plan in the attached file. WORD FILE

NFIB Small Business Problems - Each year the NFIB releases a list of its top 100 small business problems. This document looks at those problems and provides some insight into how SBDCs are an important part of the solution. WORD FILE. The problems are also listed in EXCEL FILE. Are you versed at HOW legislative agencies get a RETURN ON INVESTMENT for macro funds invested in entrepreneurship?

You should be. It is a huge part of the appeal for why funding partners will INVEST in the SBDC program. Entrepreneurship provides an excellent return and the SBDC MODEL is a strong one. But don't assume they "get it" without explaining it. Get adept at getting this point across - and defending it when others attack it. This is key to the SBDC approach.
